Conflict fishing local dock. Poor etiquette from me ?

Today I decided to go fishing in a heavily fished small lake here in Colorado. You can only fish one side of the lake due to not being able to cross to the other side. So the bank does get very crowded. I decided I was going to try fishing the dock, when I walked up a man and his wife were on each corner of the dock leaving a gap in the middle between them. Plenty of space to fish I thought. I said hello and the wife was nice and said hi but the man said nothing and I knew he didn’t want me fishing between them. I sat down and started putting bait on. While I watched him make some false casts from his corner all the way across to hers. Once I cast my line out strait. He seemed to have become a pro caster and was staying to his side. He was using lures and I was using bait on the bottom. here’s where he got mad. i asked him. Do you want me to fish the corner and ill cast far left so we don’t get lines crossed. he replied saying well I’m fishing this corner because I want to and was here first. I said well I was just trying to make sure we don’t cross and you guys can have that side of the dock together. being between them was awkward. I forgot what he was said after but I pretty much ignored him and said well you don’t own the dock. They wife left to find a spot on the bank and the man stayed for another half hour probably furious with me. now. I never would crowd someone on the bank. the lake we were fishing it’s normal to be 30 feet from eachother and sometimes closer. When I fish the dock I expect to fish it with other people and even expect kids to throw rocks etc. It seemed to me now that he just wanted the whole dock to him and his wife. was I wrong for trying to fish the dock with this guy ? Later 3 guys showed up and we all fished the same dock comfortably. Exchanging stories. i gave them lures and bait because they were from out of town. And they gave me a beer if that shows what kind of fisherman i am and they were. but this is the first time I’ve ever had conflict while fishing in Colorado. was it my fault ?
