Hello everyone,
Very newbie trout fisherman here. I’m looking for some advice on how to make a particular bait setup function as intended. I’ve seen many people recommend the following bait setup for fishing trout in both streams and lakes; a sliding weight with a barrel swivel, followed by a 1.5 – 3 foot leader with hook and bait on the end. My understanding of this setup is that the hook should float up off the bottom in the strike zone of the fish, weighed down by the sliding weight.
When I put this setup together and dropped it on the shore close to me so i could still see it, i noticed that the hook didn’t float up but instead sunk to the bottom with the weight. Am i misunderstanding how this setup is supposed to function? or maybe i don’t have the right tools for the job? Is there a particular type of bait i should be using that allows the hook to be buoyant?
Any guidance is appreciated, thanks for reading!
