Been looking for a short distance road trip and think I’ve settled on driving the Blue Ridge Parkway from end to end. I live within an hour of the northern terminus but have never been past Meadows of Dan in VA. Looking to maybe spend a day or two around the southern end and do a little fishing. It’ll definitely be more of a trip with fishing than a fishing trip if that makes sense. So far, the NC portion of GSMNP, the Davidson, or in Cherokee are what I’m looking at. We have had a super dry summer on the northern end of the BRP and I’m definitely avoiding native streams up here. Virginia also ceases stocking on June 1. It looks like at least the Davidson and Cherokee streams get stocked through the summer. I don’t really have a set date to make this trip yet, but is bringing a rod worthwhile if I go in July or August? I’d prefer wild trout but not super picky, I fly and spin fish and don’t plan on keeping anything on this trip. It looks like there are some lakes along the BRP I may briefly stop at, I assume they’d all be warm water fishing in the middle of summer? Should I just plan on waiting for cooler weather in October so I can enjoy better fishing and the colors of fall? Thanks in advance, any advice or input appreciated, fishing or otherwise!
